Mitsubishi are one of Japan’s best known automotive manufacturers, yet have only officially been around for a relatively short time as Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, having been founded in 1970. Despite this, their origins can be traced back as early as 1917 through the Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Company, who produced the Mitsubishi Model A. The Model A was a hand-built seven-seater, and was Japan’s first series-production car. IIt proved expensive to build compared to the mass produced competition in the American and European markets, and with only 22 units built, it was discontinued in 1921.

In more recent history, fellow Japanese company Nissan bought a 34% share in Mitsubishi in 2016, and it subsequently became part of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance.

Mitsubishi in motorsport

When it comes to motorsport, Mitsubishi are best known for their involvement in the World Rally Championship through their Ralliart division. First taking on the challenge of rallying in 1967, the Japanese company sent out models including the Colt, Starion, Galant and Lancer into various rally events, with the Lancer Evolution (or ‘Evo’ as it’s affectionately known) being Mitsubishi’s most famous competitor, winning four consecutive World Drivers’ Champion titles from 1996 to 1999.

In addition to their involvement in WRC, Mitsubishi also competed in the Dakar rally 26 times between 1983 and 2009, claiming 12 wins in the process.

What size are Mitsubishi number plates?

Generally speaking, all Mitsubishi models will have standard size UK number plates (520mm x 11mm) affixed to them. However, like other manufacturers, certain models are able to display custom Mitsubishi license plates to the rear of the vehicle. For example, the 2016-present Outlander is able to display a 780mm x 150mm rear number plate which perfectly fits the recess in which it sits.

Some people also choose to fit more square number plates to models such as the Lancer Evolution, with import sizes fitting the bill here, although these are commonly found to the front of the car rather than the vehicle.
